Janiculum:

Marie Vassiliou (soprano), John Trusler (violin), Graham Walker (cello), and Jane Clark (harpsichord)

By setting Scarlatti’s ‘Spanish’ sonatas beside the music of his Italian contemporaries their startling originality is highlighted. Contrasting ‘Italian’ sonatas are also included to show Scarlatti’s range of style and emotion.

Janiculum, which takes its name from the hill in Rome, is known for ‘interesting and enterprising’ programmes that give ‘insight into the music that appealed to contemporary audiences’. Jane Clark’s work on the Spanish influence in Scarlatti has received international recognition.

10 November ‘ The Triumphs of Georgianna’ georgianna
Lady Georgianna:

Abi Seabrook (voice), Emily Hurrell (baroque cello), and Micaela Schmitz (harpsichord)

They owe their allegiance to their adopted King George (III) and enjoy performing at the Pleasure Gardens of Vauxhall and Ranelagh, where all the important opera singers and actors of the day give everyone a good show.

We hear about the travails of Phyllis and Strephon, Damon and Laura, Colin and Chloe, the plight of women at the hand of the fickle rover. We also learn just how to sell your heart on the open market and find out who’s hiding behind a mask at the masquerade ball.
