Michele Benuzzi: ‘The Sunset of the Harpsichord’

Italian harpsichordist Michele Benuzzi performs late eighteenth-century repertoire as his London début: works by C.P.E. Bach, W.F. Bach, Kellner, and Hässler. He will explore both the melancholic and virtuosic aspects of music in this period: the rise after this sunset was romanticism.

Jane Clark, Penelope Cave, Gilbert Rowland: ‘Celebrating Scarlatti’

Jane will trace the development of his musical style from the da capo aria to the songs of ‘carriers, muleteers & common people’. She will illustrate her talk with recordings of arias by Scarlatti & his contemporaries to show what he left behind in Italy. Then, in order to show the dramatic effect Spain had on him, she will play examples of the Spanish folk music that caused such a change, played beside relevant sonatas. Penelope will examine the effect of Scarlatti’s Essercizi upon English composers and players of the harpsichord, illustrating her discussion with musical examples. To complete the event, Gilbert Rowland will perform a range of Scarlatti sonatas.

Charlotte Wilson: ‘Passion and Profundity: contrasting delights in European harpsichord music

The very talented young harpsichordist Charlotte Wilson makes her second appearance at Handel House, playing works by Chambonnières, Frescobaldi, Bull, Rameau, and C.P.E Bach.

Pamela Nash & others: ‘Fifty years of music for harpsichord by Stephen Dodgson’

Pamela Nash, editor of the recent Cadenza Music publication, will lead an afternoon exploring its content in the company of fellow harpsichordists: Jane Clark, Gilbert Rowland, Ian Thompson, Katharine May, David Wright, Julian Perkins, and Tom Foster. (The list of performers may be liable to minor changes, depending on availability.)

Larry Palmer: Hommages

Larry Palmer visits from America to perform some familiar repertoire and to introduce some pieces of special interest – works by Handel, Scarlatti, Charles Wesley II, Glenn Spring, and Bach.

Jane Clark: Les Graces Incomparables

The popular and highly-respected harpsichordist Jane Clark appears in her own right to perform a programme of French music: Louis Couperin, Chambonnières, d’Anglebert, Dagincour, François Couperin, and Forqueray.

 

Handel House is at 25 Brook Street, Mayfair, just off Bond Street, between Grosvenor Square and Hanover Square. The entrance to the Museum is round the back of Brook Street, in Lancashire Court. Tube to Bond Street (Jubilee and Central lines) and walk down South Molton Street; or tube to Oxford Circus (Victoria, Central and Bakerloo lines) and walk down Regent Street, Hanover Street then Brook Street.
