As an organist and harpsichordist, John Collins has
been researching and playing Spanish and Portuguese
keyboard music of the 16th -18th centuries for 20
years, and regularly includes works from this
repertoire as post-service voluntaries at St George's,
Worthing where he is organist, as well as in his
frequent recitals in the South. He has also played for
the FIMTE Conference in Spain.
He contributes reviews of scores and CDs regularly to
Organists' Review, Clavichord International, The
Diapason (USA) and was invited by the Royal College of
Organists' to contribute an overview of the repertoire
1500-c1750 for their Yearbook which was published in
summer 2003. This includes descriptions of printed and
MSS sources, and many tables of analysis. He also
spoke on this subject to the British Clavichord
Society's Iberian Day in 2003. He is planning a
further such article covering c1750-1850, and to this
end is continuing to examine 18th century Iberian mss,
with a special interest on the potential
interchangeability of instruments for the execution of
the pieces.
A fluent speaker of both Spanish and Portuguese, he
prepares translations of prefaces for Iberian
publishers as well as acting as an importer of scores
and textbooks for colleges as well as individuals.
Additional research interests include the development
of English harpsichord lessons/sonatas and organ
voluntaries in the 18th century.
John would be delighted to obtain any material for

repertoire and performance and will also undertake
translations at highly competitive rates. or tel. 01903 233117
