KNOCK’D ON THE HEAD (Concordia: directed by Mark Levy,Susanne Heinrich, Joanna Levine, Emilia Benjamin, Reiko Ichise and Alison McGillivray: viols, Gary Cooper: organ, harpsichord, with Elin Manahan Thomas: soprano)

William Lawes’s powerful Setts, or suites as we would call them, were written in the shadow of the impending Civil War, in which Lawes was to lose his life.   Every page reveals the passionate boldness of a musician far removed from the majority who “chose rather to fiddle at home, than to goe out , and be knock’d on the head abroad.”   Alongside two of LawesSetts, the programme includes show-stopping songs by his great successor Henry Purcell, and an unexpected early piece of programme music, John Jenkins’ description in music of the 1646 Siege of Newark.

A BRITISH HARPSICHORD SOCIETY EVENT

BACH PARTITAS (Sharon Gould, young professionals and advanced students from London and Manchester:  harpsichord)

Sharon Gould will launch and direct an afternoon to present Bach’s Six Partitas for harpsichord, in which she will be joined by young professionals and advanced students from London and Manchester.   Sharon’s experience of interpreting and performing Bach is widely acknowledged and her work with young performers at the Royal Northern College of Music promises a lively and fascinating afternoon.

Sharon’s performance of Bach’s 6th Partita at Handel House in December brought the following comments from the British Harpsichord Society review ‘…..the inspiring impression that this recital left is of the combination of qualities that it demonstrated:  technical command, of course; but also the witchcraft that makes a harpsichord sing – and sing in different voices – so beautifully; and with all that performer’s musicality was combined a teacher’s ability to communicate while she plays, to enact the sense by revealing the structure.’

She will be on hand to discuss the performance puzzles and problems of these challenging works and also to share the many joys that they inspire in both player and listener.
